Here's how Canada could lead the charge:
Crack down on crypto corruption: Trump's shady ventures into meme coins like $Trump and $Melania are ripe for regulation.
Canada's leadership in the crypto industry positions it perfectly to spearhead global efforts to clean up this murky space to stop Trump and others from taking advantage of people.
Shine light on shady real estate: The Trump Organization has long leveraged opaque real estate markets. Canada could implement transparency measures that would expose these practices domestically and inspire similar actions globally.
Tackle tax havens and money laundering: An aggressive Canadian initiative could target both Trump and the broligarchs who enable him, exposing the murky world of offshore finance that has shielded many in Trump's orbit — including Mark Zuckerberg and other tech titans.
Punish broligarchs for the social harm they cause: Canada has already stood up to Meta over ad revenue. It could lead international efforts to rein in the corrosive effects of social media and disinformation on democracy — a key concern given the tech titans' support for Trump.
Yank Elon Musk's supply chain: Canada's critical position in supply chains for companies like Tesla gives it another point of pressure on Trump's allies in the business world. Musk is a particularly important target.
But here's a crucial point: This isn't just about Canada. The same principles apply to many U.S. states, especially large "blue" states with significant economic clout.
By exercising their domestic governance and anti-corruption measures, states can create a powerful network of resistance against corruption and authoritarianism.
We all need to take an anti-corruption lens. It is the best — and only — path forward for democracy.
At the Dekleptocracy Project, we're working tirelessly to expose the pathways of corruption taking over and develop strategies to combat them.
Our research and advocacy are more critical than ever as we face threats to democracy at home and abroad.
Many US states have much of the same leverage as Canada, and we’re starting to organize them to use the anticorruption authorities, in much the same way
Your support allows us to continue this vital work, including with our upcoming Research Hub and organizing states. It will enable us to uncover more corruption (which is reaching critical levels) and get it into the hands of more journalists, state governments and noisemakers so we can effect change. Time is of the essence.
Whether it's a monthly contribution (we need to raise $40,000 monthly to sustain operations) or a one-time donation of $25, $50, $100, or more, your support helps us build a more robust defense against corruption and protect the rule of law.
The fight against corruption is about preserving democracy and fairness in our global economic system. With your help, we can continue to lead this charge.
Thank you for standing with us.
