The Dekleptocracy Project
Stand with Ukraine

Put the Ukrainian flag on your profile picture.

Choose a photo, pick a style, save the result, and we will walk you through changing your picture on every site you use. It takes about half a minute.

Your photo stays with you

This page does all of its work inside your browser. Your picture is never uploaded to our server, never stored, and never seen by anyone at the Dekleptocracy Project. We do not keep the photo, its file name, its location data or any other information about you. This page loads no analytics or tracking scripts. How we can promise that.

Choose your photo

Or drag a picture here. JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC, up to 30 MB.

Your photo never leaves your device. It is not uploaded, not stored, and not seen by us.

Pick a style and adjust the crop

Your preview will appear here once you choose a photo.

Save your new picture

The file is 1024 by 1024 pixels, which every platform below accepts. It is built fresh from the preview, so the hidden data cameras add to photos (location, device, time) is not in it. On a phone you can also press and hold the preview to save it.

Put it on your profiles

Which sites do you use? Tick them and we will show the exact steps for each one. Your choices stay in this browser tab and are not sent anywhere.

Pass it on

Two reasons to put the flag on your picture, and to ask your friends to do the same.

It makes you a poor target for Russian trolls.

The United States is heading into national elections, and Russia's troll factories are working overtime. It is true that Russian propaganda has pushed support for Trump, but that misreads the goal. Russian disinformation targets partisanship and polarization themselves. Moscow wants social division. It wants to divide America, and Trump is simply a means to that end.

This may sound like a small distinction. It is not. The trap is that many well-meaning Democrats will fall into it too, because the Kremlin will soon push divisive, partisan material from the left as well. Moscow's trolls will gleefully amplify anti-Trump narratives to build anger. Our politics should be our own, and the narrative for them should not be set in the Kremlin.

We want to warn our Democratic friends about this risk, and offer a very simple shield against some of the propaganda, and against becoming a useful tool of it. Nothing is foolproof. But showing your support for Ukraine makes it less likely that a Russian troll farm finds you an appealing target.

It shows that citizens still stand with democracy.

Ukraine has become a hopeful symbol of a resilient democracy. Now more than ever, when U.S. foreign policy has taken such a shameful turn, Americans, and the people watching America, need to see that citizens support democracy.

Our politicians also need to find the courage to oppose the government's corrupt cozying up to Putin. Broad, visible support among the public may help them find it.

How we can promise your photo stays private

There is no upload. The page has no server endpoint that accepts files. When you choose a photo, your browser opens it locally, the same way a photo app on your phone would, and draws it onto a canvas on this page.

The browser is told to enforce it. This page is delivered with a Content Security Policy that forbids it from connecting to any other website and from submitting any form. Even a bug in our code could not send your picture anywhere.

No tracking. The analytics used elsewhere on dekleptocracy.org are switched off on this page, and the same policy blocks them from loading. Links out to Facebook, X and the others are opened without a referrer, so those sites are not told you came from here.

The file you save is brand new. It is re-encoded from the pixels in the preview. Hidden data that cameras put inside photos, such as GPS location, device model and the time it was taken, is not carried over. Neither is anything else that may have been tucked inside the original file.

It cannot be used to spread malware. Nothing you choose is ever stored or served back to anyone, so this page cannot become a relay for a harmful file. Your browser only ever decodes the image with its own built-in, sandboxed image decoder.

You can check. Open your browser's developer tools, watch the Network panel, and use the tool. No request carries your photo. The code is in our site's repository as well.
